Law Day: Celebrating the Rule of Law

On May 1st of every year, we come together to acknowledge the importance of the rule of law in our society. In honor of this year’s Law Day, we have compiled five significant reasons for this day.

What is Law Day?

Law Day is set aside to celebrate the rule of law and honor its contributions to our country’s freedoms. Law Day provides an opportunity to understand how law and the legal process protect our liberty, strive to achieve justice, and contribute to the freedoms that all Americans share. It was established in 1958 by President Eisenhower to represent our country’s commitment to the rule of law. Since then, May 1st has been commemorated annually as Law Day.

Why is Law Day Important?

Here are the top five reasons why we celebrate Law Day:

  1. Democracy – Law Day reinforces democracy by highlighting the importance of adhering to the rule of law. It shows that we are a nation that respects and upholds legal principles.
  2. Human Rights – Law Day emphasizes protecting human rights and promoting legal equality, including due process and fair trial.
  3. Law Enforcement – Law Day acknowledges the role played by law enforcement in maintaining order, protecting citizens, and enforcing the law.
  4. Legal System – Law Day acknowledges the legal system’s importance and our obligation as citizens to uphold and support the legal system.
  5. Education – Law Day raises awareness among our communities about the legal system, leading to more informed and engaged citizens.

Law Day Themes and Events

An annual theme is chosen each year to spotlight a particular aspect of law or the legal process and its impact on our daily lives. The 2023 Law Day theme will be “Cornerstones of Democracy: Civics, Civility, and Collaboration.” We invite all the people of the United States to join us in rebuilding trust in our institutions, respect for one another, and our willingness to collaborate to address the challenges that face our nation. You can visit the American Bar Association’s website for more information about Law Day.
